Advani Hails Poetic Skills of Vajpayee
New Delhi: An emotional BJP veteran L K Advani today hailed the poetic skills of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said though he can recite poems, he can never write one.
Addressing a gathering at the release of a collection of poems by senior parliamentarian Najma Heptullah, titled Impressions, Advani said had Vajpayee been in good health, he would have requested Heptullah to invite him for the launch of the book.
"I can recite poems by Vajpayee... I have not written even a single piece of poetry, though I have written a lot," Advani said.
He also recited a couple of stanzas from Vajpayee's poems.
Advani said Bollywood star Aamir Khan, who was present on the occasion, would have been a better choice for the launch of Impressions.
"Poetry is painting in words...I don't know whether Aamir is a painter, but he certainly is an artist," the BJP leader said after launching the book. Aamir, nephew of Heptullah, attended the function along with his wife Kiran Rao.
He also recited some of the poems from Impressions.
In her reply, Heptullah said Advani writes "beautifully" and she was sure the former deputy prime minister wrote poetry in his home as he had a "soft heart".
"You have a very soft heart," Najma told Advani and added that she had seen the veteran leader in a pensive mood on a number of occasions.
"I have seen... You had tears in your eyes. I am sure you can write poetry quite in your home... Or you are moved by something," she said.
Impressions, a collection of poems written at different places over a span of 25 years, was released in the presence of dignitaries including BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia and other senior leaders.
