Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif coming soon at movie theatres in China
In a rare commercial release of an Indian film here, Dhoom: 3, Aamir Khan-Katrina Kaif blockbuster is slated to be released in China
on July 25.
The release was confirmed by the state-run Xinhua news agency after it released four photographs of the movie including one of the official poster with Aamir on it.
It’s not yet clear how many screens across China the film will be released in. Hollywood Reporter claimed that at 2000 screens, the movie is slated to get the widest-ever release for an Indian movie in China.
Interestingly, Dhoom: 3, it is learnt, is not being released under the quota system that China has for foreign movies; only 34 foreign movies can be released every year after being censored by the government. The slots are mainly booked by big-ticket Hollywood released.
Instead, Dhoom: 3 has been imported by the China Film Group, the state-run film enterprise in the Communist Party of China (CPC)-ruled country.
Dubbed in Chinese, the movie’s name in the local language is Huan Ying Che Shen, which could be roughly translated in English as masters of light, speed and cars; the tagline talks about magic, stealing and passion.
Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots, which was also released here much after its India release, had touched a chord among the Chinese audience because of its commentary on the system of education.
Among the other Hindi movies to have had limited release in China are Lagaan, My Name is Khan and Hrithik Roshan-starrer, Krrish 2.
But it is Raj Kapoor’s Awara which continues to be fondly remembered by old-timers because of its intrinsic message of socialism. It’s not uncommon for elderly taxi drivers to begin humming its title tune Aware Hoon in Chinese if the passenger is recognised as Indian.
