Empower girls, teach boys to respect women, says Aamir Khan
Commenting on the growing atrocities against women, Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Monday said that girls should be empowered and at the same time, boys should be offered proper upbringing so that they learn to respect women.
He was addressing the function organized to mark the launch of country’s first One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) for preventing atrocities against women in Bhopal on Monday.
The actor lauded the courage of those women who took to the stage in the function and narrated the ordeal they faced in their lives and how they managed to retaliate and inspired many.
“Female remains nucleus of the family, so the parents should empower their daughters,” he urged.
He felicitated several women who had shown exemplary courage against atrocities and presented themselves as role models.
Early in the event, Sarika Sinha regional manager of volunteer organization ‘Action Aid Association’ cutting a sorry figure of Madhya Pradesh in atrocities against women told the gathering that the state registers nine rape cases daily and records 2 deaths in dowry cases in the same duration.
Describing the OSCC as the first such initiative in the country, Sinha said that the centre would act as 24x7 helpline offer psychological, medical, legal help apart from providing assistance in rehabilitation of women who suffer atrocities like rape, violence and acid attacks.
Under the state government’s initiative –Gauravi, the centre would function from Jaiprakash Hospital.
The unique establishment has been jointly started by Action Aid Association and Family Welfare and Health department of MP Government.
Similar facilities would be opened in every district of the state in future.
For offering bigger space to a troupe of young girls who performed on the title song from Aamir Khan’s movie Taare Zamin Pe, the actor showed plenty of humility and sat on the floor on the corner of the stage.
The group Nrityanjali included some members who were abandoned by their families for being the girl child.
After the performance, the actor happily posed for pictures with the group.
Aamir Khan launches India's first One Stop Crisis Centre in Bhopal
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan launched India's first One Stop Crisis Centre, which aims at protection for women, today in Bhopal.
During the press conference, the 49-year-old actor said, "I'm extremely happy to be here today, and the reason is the launch of our country's very first One Stop Crisis Centre, which is an important first step towards protection for women."
Khan, who had raised women protection issues through his show 'Satyamev Jayate' on television, added, "Thought it's a beginning to a long term solution, it is essential for people to know that they will be punished for the crime, and they will be caught, and the centre will assure that."
Speaking on the recent remarks by Indian politicians regarding rape, the actor said, "It's sad that such comments come from the administration. I think people only make such statements when they don't have enough knowledge about the crime."
"We hope and expect that the leaders we have chosen will take the right steps to ensure our safety."
One Stop Crisis Centre, which is a collaboration of many organizations, will be opened in every district of Madhya Pradesh.
Harried husbands jam helpline Aamir launched for rape victims
Counsellors at India’s first one-stop crisis centre, which was opened in Bhopal on Monday, were surprised to find that in less than two days of its existence a sizable number of help-seekers were men.
The OSCC, Gauravi, was inaugurated with much fanfare on Monday by film actor Aamir Khan at Bhopal district hospital. Victims of rape, domestic violence can call for help on a toll-free number or walk in and seek help in getting medical aid, FIRs and counselling.
However, 30% of the calls received so far by the centre were made by men who were complaining about harassment by their wives.
“We informed them that the OSCC is for assisting women facing harassment and violence, not men. We also asked them to file a complaint with police if their problems are serious,” said Anamika Roy of NGO Action Aid.
“Some also requested that such centres shall also be established for men who are victims of harassment by women,” she said.
Action Aid is providing technical assistance to the health department to run the OSCC.
Meanwhile, the centre received 20 complaints of domestic violence and recommended counselling for five callers. One victim of violence was provided medical help and a woman being forced by her husband to divorce him was provided counselling.
Another complainant was a victim of domestic violence who was undergoing treatment at a hospital. She had alleged her in-laws had poisoned her.
The counsellors handling the OSCC, however, had to deal with another problem. Many people made prank calls on the toll free number, forcing the staff to seek police’s help.
The establishment of the centre has been hailed widely, as the highest number of rapes in the country, according to National Crime Record Bureau’s 2012 report, happened in Madhya Pradesh.
Such centres are being planned for the rest of the districts of the state. Chief minister Shivraj Chouhan has expressed confidence that these centres will help in preventing crimes against women.
Bhopal gets one-stop women help centre
Based on an idea from a television show hosted by actor Aamir Khan, India’s first one stop crisis resolution centre — which seeks to provide medical, legal, psychological and police assistance at a single place to women who are victims of sexual violence — was inaugurated here on Monday.
The centre under Gauravi Abhiyan began functioning at J P Hospital, a government-run hospital in Bhopal. The government promised to open such units in every district in the state. The one stop crisis resolution centre, to be run by the health department and NGO Action Aid, will provide medical assistance to victims of sexual violence, help file police complaints, give legal support beside protection and counselling. If required, it will help them get benefit from government schemes.
Khan, the creator of popular weekly TV show Satyamev Jayate, at the inauguration of the centre said when the idea of one-stop resolution centres was first floated as many as one crore people had endorsed it by giving missed calls. He also congratulated the MP government for taking lead in implementing it. Listing pro-women schemes initiated by him over last eight years, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he would continue the mission of empowering women and providing justice to victims of sexual violence.
