Aamir Khan lectures IIM-A students on film industry
indiatoday.in, February 7, 2009
Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Saturday shared his 20 years of experience in the film industry in a lecture to IIM-A students as a part of institute's elective course "Introduction to Contemporary Film Industry".
The corporatisation of Indian Film Industry has aroused interest in the premier B-school of country, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) to study the nitty-gritty of Bollywood and they had introduced this course.
As a part of this course, which started from December, for students studying in institutes flagship post-graduate diploma programme, Aamir Khan was invited as a guest faculty by the IIM-A.
Aamir's 'pathshala' lasted for about two hours in the IIM-A.
Khan today discussed the kind of challenges he faced during the start of his career, and the kind of scripts and directors he aspired to work with, a student at IIM-A who attended the class of Aamir Khan said.
He basically shared his experiences of last 20 years of his career in the film industry with the students, the students added.
Khan also presented analysis of his successful films and why they became so successful and he also discussed his flops with reasons why they did not click.
Another student said as a part of his lecture he also discussed marketing strategies to make his latest flick Ghajni a hit. Explaining his marketing strategy he also talked about the promotional events where he himself cut hairs of number of children in Ghajni style.
"He is a very creative and professional in his approach and that is what the best I like about him," another student said.
Earlier, Apurva Lakhia director of Shootout at Lokhandwala and Dhoom famed Sanjay Gadhvi has shared their experience with IIM-A students under the same course.
Before 30 to 40 years film industry was not given a status of industry. But things are different now with entry of players like Adlabs, Reliance and UTV in film making," IIM-A professor Tejas Desai said.
"It is important for students of IIM-A to study the Indian Film Industry in the changing circumstances as the industry will require professional managers in future. So I thought my students should be exposed to the various aspects of film industry," Desai added.
Aamir Khan dons a new role at IIM-Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: The thinking actor of Bollywood, Aamir Khan played a new role at country's premier B-School, IIM-A, upon his hush-hush visit here. He donned the role of a professor and taught around eighty second-year students of the flagship PGDM the tricks of trade in Bollywood for more than two hours.
Well, this was not any film shooting, but the superstar was at the campus to deliver lecture as a part of an elective course on 'Introduction to Contemporary Film Industry' introduced newly in the course. However, Aamir's visit to the IIM-A campus was quite dramatic, as few institute authorities were privy to this visit. Even senior faculty members and students could not know about this until the last moment.
"O really, has Aamir Khan come to the campus?'' asked a senior faculty when told about his visit. Another faculty member reacted: "O yes, I saw him walking towards his classroom.'' The institute tried to play down his visit and did not allow for media interaction.
Aamir, however, seemed nonchalant as he headed to class in casual tees and jeans. Politely refusing to pose for pictures, he said he was running late for his class. The students who had registered for the course managed to gain lessons of wisdom from the superstar.
The lucky few who managed to pose for picture with the superstar were security guards! Many who were brought in to guard the premises especially in the light of his visit, clearly had a field day as the star moved around IIM-A's new campus.
While media was kept at bay, a few spectators wondered why even students weren't privy to an audience with the star and given an opportunity to interact with the newest professor on campus.
While several high-profile guests have donned the role of professor including ex-President Abdul Kalam, Railway minister Lalu Yadav, and two Bollywood producers, it is the first time that this level of unnecessary restrictions and secrecy seemed to have been imposed.

What is common between Aamir Khan and IIM Ahmedabad? Come on, it’s an easy catch! The link is 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan’s latest movie whose screenplay has been adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller ‘5 point someone’. Chetan Bhagat is an alumnus of IIM-A, a passout of 1997. On Feb 7, 2009, all roads in IIMA led to Class Room 10 where Aamir Khan was to deliver a lecture to a batch of around 80 second year students as part of their elective course “Introduction to Contemporary Film Industry”. Aamir Khan shared his experience in the film industry over the past two decades and gave a lot of insights into the ‘business’ side of film-making.
The initiative by Prof. Tejas Desai to float this course was hugely successful and all students were very pleased with both the experience of ‘learning’ from Aamir himself as well as the opportunity to understand the film industry in a systematic manner. Famous celebrities who have donned the new role of teaching before Aamir for this course include Apoorva Lakhia and Sanjay Gadhvi. This evening with Aamir is something no one who was there will ever forget!
