Genius at work: Aamir Khan
A young Aamir Khan took to the streets to promote his first film. He stood at traffic signals with the posters of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak urging people to watch his debut with Juhi Chawla. That was the genesis of a career that is now identified as marketing/creative genius. Right from the beginning, Aamir’s marched to his own drumbeats. He’s had his fair share of run-ins with controversy along the way. But none can deny he’s a perfect combination of looks, mind power and talent, which have earned him the sobriquet of ‘the perfectionist’. Yet he’s all that and more. Surely, an actor by profession and a humanist by choice!
- (L) Baby Aamir with father Tahir Hussain. Tahir directed Aamir in one film, which was his direcotiral debut Tum Mere Ho
- (R) In a test shot for the dark crime thriller Raakh. It was a gritty movie that has now attained a cult status but unfortunately it had failed at the box-office
- With Raj Kapoor at the launch of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in what was one of last few public appearances by the showman. Also seen on stage are Mansoor Khan and Nassir Hussain
- One of the rare occasions when Aamir played a grey character in Aatank Hi Aatank. In this Godfather inspired gangster movie, Aamir locked horns with Rajnikanth
Heartbreak kid
Tahir Hussain’s son Aamir wasn’t launched like a usual film family kid. Instead, his debut movie was a small-budget production. Yes, it had great tunes by Anand-Milind. Aamir had worked as a child actor in Yaadon Ki Baaraat and had a second fiddle role in Holi as a novice. But when Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak released to a rousing reception Aamir became the new heartthrob. He broke hearts when he admitted that he was already married to his childhood sweetheart Reena Dutta. But that didn’t discourage his female fans. No wonder Aamir was then cast in a slew of lightweight romances of which Dil with Madhuri Dixit was a resounding success. Even then Aamir took risks like Raakh and Awwal Number.
- (L) With Kajol in a test shot of Baazigar, a film that was first offered to Aamir. He rejected it and the rest is history. Kajol and Aamir got a chance to work together again 13 years later in Fanaa
- (R) Playing with a live band promoting Raja Hindustani. Aamir’s always had a penchant for innovating for film promotions. As a result Raja Hindustani turned out to be a blockbuster
- He’s known for his variety in roles. One such experiment was Ghulam where he buffed up for a boxer-cum-rowdy’s role. He even sung for the cult song Aati kya khandala
- With AR Rahman, Urmila Matondkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Ram Gopal Varma and team Rangeela at the launch of the film. It is one of Aamir’s career’s biggest successes
- Promoting Dil Chahta Hai in Delhi in what has now become a new-age style. Aamir’s spiked hair and goatee are still in fashion
Slow and steady
Many say it was Aamir’s choosy nature that let Shah Rukh Khan cement a place in the movies. Aamir reportedly said no to Darr, Baazigar, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and many other films. He chose to focus on films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Rangeela. And then he hit a purple patch with blockbusters Raja Hindustani, Ishq and Ghulam. It helped that Aamir was playing contrasting characters in every film, far from the formulaic.
- With peer and competitor Shah Rukh Khan. The two have shared a bittersweet rivalry over the years
- (L) Lagaan was a huge hit and it was even nominated for the Academy Awards. Aamir is seen promoting the movie in a Mumbai mall
- (Centre) Playing a badminton match with shuttler Aparna Popat. This is Aamir’s favourite sport
- (R) Promoting his film at a radio station in the famous Ghajini look
- At his father Tahir Hussain’s funeral with brother Faisal Khan (left). The brothers worked together in Mela and were also involved in a legal case over Faisal’s treatment by Aamir
- Addressing a press conference after he met a parliamentary panel to discuss the medical problems highlighted in his show Satyamev Jayate
- With wife Kiran Rao attending his assistant’s wedding. Aamir had promised Sudhakar he would be part of his big day
- (L) With Arbaaz and Salman Khan at a Dabangg 2 party
- (R) Captured in a pensive mood on the set of Peekay
Ace among all
Sarfarosh ascertained that Aamir was evolving as an actor. And when he took on the rustic Lagaan he made it a personal project. He turned producer and he even adopted a village in Bhuj. Simultaneously, he went metrosexual in Dil Chahta Hai spurring a riotous imitation of his spiked haircut and goatee by teenagers. Aamir took time off for the magnum opus of Mangal Pandey but it flopped. There was also the Jessica Hines controversy where the British journalist alleged she had mothered Aamir’s love child Jaan. But he chose not to react. Instead he restored balance with Rang De Basanti. This was also the time he took a stand for the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Aamir conquered the director’s chair with the sensitive Taare Zameen Par and then turned things on ‘the head’ to unleash a marketing blitzkrieg for Ghajini (he had theatre ushers sporting his Ghajini hairdo). This was followed by the 3 Idiots phenomenon, which further established Aamir as a marketing genius. The humanitarian in him wasn’t too far behind. His TV show Satyamev Jayate focussed on problems plaguing the society and braveheart stories. It earned Aamir a Time Magazine cover. His mega-budget Dhoom 3 is about to release and promises to end the year with a bang!
