Lata Khubchandani interviews Aamir Khan: 10 Questions
- Your first film with Kareena Kapoor. How was the chemistry across the age divide?
The audiences will decide that soon.
- How was Raju Hirani as a director? He seems too soft.
He’s very perceptive, clear about what he’s looking for. Everyone on set feels relaxed and comfortable to approach him with anything. So he has this wonderful quality as a leader and everyone completely trusts him.
- After the Munnabhai films, Raju is an established name. Is that why you agreed to work with him?
I loved both his earlier films but the script of 3 Idiots resonated with me immediately.
- Is it true you and Raju didn’t agree with the release of the promos?
Absolutely untrue. For me, the director must be satisfied with whatever is happening even if I have a point of view and I put it across.
- How much prep was required for this role?
A surprising lot because I had to play a character half my age and that’s difficult.
- Isn’t that an actor’s job in any case?
Yes, it is, but jumping age lines is tough. You’re seasoned, more aware and less innocent so while the physical look may be achieved it is difficult to feel half your age.
- So, a younger person would do a better job?
Yes. Every day before we had to start shooting, I messaged both Raju and Vidhu Vinod Chopra that they could change their minds even at the last moment.
- And when you started shooting?
It was enjoyable but I had a lot of questions.
- After two decades, is acting easier?
No. Not at all. It’s always difficult because you have to create every scene, every emotion anew. It was never easy and it isn’t easy now.
- You didn’t train in acting. How do you figure out if what you are doing is OK?
My character must ring true, that’s the bottomline. People mustn’t feel "arre... he’s acting".
