The President Pratibha Devisingh Patil presenting Padma Bhushan Award to Amir Khan
Padma Bhushan award is an Indian civilian decoration established on January 2, 1954 by the President of India. It stands third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan, but comes before the Padma Sri. It is awarded to recognize distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field.

Nobel laureate of Indian origin Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Apollo hospital chief Pratap Reddy and former RBI Governor Y V Reddy, eminent theatre personalities Zohra Segal, Ebrahim Alkazi and noted mridangam Carnatic artist Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman were on Monday chosen for the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan.
Music maestros Ilayaraja, A R Rahman and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan have been named for Padma Bhushan. The other awardees in this category include noted NRI hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal, eminent neurosurgeon Satya Paul Agarwal and eminent cardiac surgeon Ramakant Panda.
Cricketer Virendra Sehwag, Hockey national Ignace Tirkey, Formula 1 driver Narain Kartikeyan, Badminton star Saina Nehwal, Boxer Vijender Singh and Sachin Tendulkars guru Ramakant Achrekar have been selected for Padma Shri awards in sports category.
Actors Rekha, Saif Ali Khan and sound designer Resul Pokutty are among the Padma Shri awards.
The Government of India named 130 people, including 13 in the category of foreigners, NRIs and PIOs. 6 are awarded Padma Vibhushan, 43 Padma Bhushan and 83 are Padma Shri.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has been selected for the 'Padma Bhushan' award on the occasion of 60th Republic Day.
Cricketer Virendra Sehwag and Badminton star Saina Nehwal have been chosen for the 'Padma Shri' awards along with yesteryear Bollywood diva Rekha and actor Saif Ali Khan.
Nobel laureate Dr Venkataraman Ramakrishnan and veteran theatre and film actor Zohra Sehgal have been chosen for the Padma Vibhushan award, the second highest civilian award in India.

44-year-old Amir Khan, who made his directorial debut with the critically-acclaimed Taare Zameen Par in 2007, recently came out with 3 Idiots that has become the highest-earning movie in Bollywood.
Apart from this, music maestro Illaiyaraaja and Oscar famed music composer A R Rahman have also been selected for the prestigious Padma Bhushan awards. Oscar winner sound recordist of Slumdog Millionaire Resul Pokutty has also been awarded with a Padma Shri.
Eminent journalist Fareed Zakaria and prominent hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal have also been selected for Padma Bhushan.
Eminent neurosurgeon Satya Paul Agarwal, and famed cardiac surgeon Ramakant Panda, who performed 'beating heart' surgery on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year, have also been awarded the Padma Bhushan.
Hockey player Ignace Tirkey, Formula 1 driver Narain Kartikeyan, Boxer Vijender Singh and Sachin Tendulkar's 'guru' Ramakant Achrekar have also been selected for Padma Shri awards in sports category.

Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, and veteran actor Zohra Segal are among the prominent names from the entertainment industry to be chosen for this year's Padma awards. 44-year-old Aamir, who made his directorial debut with highly acclaimed "Taare Zameen Par" in 2007, is enjoying an unprecedented success with his recent blockbuster "3 Idiots", which has become the highest earning film in Bollywood.
While Rahman, 44, who became the first Indian to win double Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire", is again in the race
for the coveted honour with his maiden Hollywood venture "Couples Retreat". Tamil song 'Na na', sung by Rahman's son
Alim, is in the Oscar shortlist this year.
Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilan honour, was also ruled by renowned faces from the world of arts. Eminent theatre and film personality Segal, founding director of National School of Drama (NSD) Ebrahim Alkazi and country's
topmost mridangam player Umayalpuram K Sivaraman are among those chosen for the honour.
Musician Ilaiyaraaja, who composed the hit numbers of Amitabh Bachchan starrer "Paa" recently, is also among those
selected for the Padma Bhushan.
Among those from the film industry who have been chosen for the Padma Sri include veteran actress Rekha, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, Academy Award-winning sound technician Resul Pokutty, TV and threate actress Arundhati Nag and Nemai Ghosh, who had done camera work for Satyajit Ray.
