This is my most challenging role to date: Aamir
A five-year wait is about to end, with Rajkumar Hirani’s next film PK starring Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput (s.a.). The makers of the film decided to launch the teaser with the media on the auspicious day of Diwali. Khan recollects, “Mostly, my films release on Christmas, so our meeting is fixed during Diwali.” The trailer received a massive response and played three times on popular demand. Here’s what transpired at the event:
Aamir Khan on PK
I have been acting for 25 years and I can divide my experiences into two parts – my entire career versus my experience working on this film. I learnt a lot while working on this film. There were many challenges and I would go so far as to say that this role has been the most challenging one to date.
Khan on toughest part
My character doesn’t blink, so I had to practice that. We were working on my character, his look and how he behaves, and there was still something missing. One day, when we were at Mehboob, Vidhu saw one test and told me that I should repeat the shot without blinking. We loved the idea but I never thought that part would become so difficult.
Rajkumar Hirani on PK
3 Idiots was close to its release when my writer Abhijat Joshi and I wondering what to do next. So one morning, we went to the Borivali National Park for a walk and we got the germ of an idea. Abhijat went to the US and we slowly started working on the script. But, I promise, I will not take five years to make my next film.
Khan on his look
The look is the same; it’s only that my character will be seen in nine different get-ups.
Khan on chewing paan
I don’t chew paan in real life but when we started shooting the film, to get into character, I used to eat 100 paans every day. I had to chew paan for every shot.
Khan on his director
Rajkumar is the kind of director who shows emotion in a funny way. He tugs at an emotional chord and tells you a good story in a funny way. That’s his USP.
Hirani on pressure
Yes, I feel a lot of pressure as the film’s release approaches. Before 3 Idiots released, I was so nervous that, after a week, I called Boman (Irani) to check if the film was actually running in cinemas and he still makes fun of me.
Khan on solo releases
Usually, we make sure we don’t release on the same day so that our films’ business doesn’t get affected and the audience can watch their favorite star.
Khan on releasing his film’s promo with SRK’s film
It’s an advantage for us because all Shah Rukh’s fans watch his films and they will get a glimpse of my film. Thanks to Shah Rukh, more people become aware of my film.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra on Hirani
I might be the producer of his film but Raju is a brilliant director and he calls the shots of the sets.
Anushka Sharma on PK
I am blessed to be part of this film. I have done so many films but Raju looks at every little detail. When we were working on my look in the film, we did so many look tests and finally he said ‘yes’ to the short hair look.
Khan on the script
To me, to find any character or to understand what I will be doing depends on the script. If a script is good, your film will also be good.
Khan on marketing strategy
This time, we are looking at print marketing and we are concentrating on posters.
