TIFF.Fest'10: Bollywood Star Aamir Khan Brings Toronto To Standstill
Khan partners with wife Kiran Rao for 'Dhobi Ghat'
Large crowds came out for Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premieres to see celebrities like Bruce Springsteen, Nicole Kidman and Robert De Niro but nothing matched the total traffic shutdown outside the Elgin Theatre Sept. 10 when Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan joined his wife and director Kiran Rao (pictured above) for the World Premiere of their Mumbai-set drama “Dhobi Ghat” (“Mumbai Diaries”).
Camera crews surrounded Khan and his "Dhobi Ghat" co-stars on the red carpet inside the theater lobby but the mob of fans chanting Khan’s name spilled across Yonge Street bringing traffic to a halt.
Inside the theater, Khan admitted that his numerous fans who know him for his popular movies “Lagaan” and “Dil Chahta Hai” might not be prepared for an independent-minded ensemble drama about a group of people whose lives crisscross in modern-day Mumbai.
“The more you scream the more nervous I’m getting,” Khan told his enthusiastic fans. ‘It’s not the kind of film I usually do.”
The only comment that quieted Khan’s many female fans came when he stood alongside his wife Kiran Rao and publicly declared his love.
“I love you like I never loved you before,” he shouted for all to hear. “And I hope to film more movies with you!”
For a brief moment, the women stopped screaming out of respect for Rao, but only for a moment.
